Professor Nina Barnett – Consultant Pharmacist: coaching, mentoring and educating the healthcare community.
I am a consultant pharmacist at a large London hospital, a visiting professor at Kingston University, London and a serving magistrate. As an eminent and highly respected member of the healthcare community, I have extensive clinical experience. I have pioneered a person-centred approach to patient consultations and medicines adherence using health coaching methods.
As an experienced coach, my work focusses on coaching for health and social care staff to overcome challenges and build on their strengths, towards positive outcomes. I enjoy developing and motivating people to improve both their confidence and competence in their chosen field and support people to reach their full potential. I promote equity, inclusion and diversity in my coaching, mentoring and clinical practice.
My academic teaching as a visiting Professor at Kingston University, and previously at Kings College London, enables me to shape the future of pharmacy practice, which is immensely rewarding. As a consultant pharmacist, I work directly with patients, doctors, pharmacists, therapists as well as contributing at a strategic national level for example, with National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and with leading clinicians in the UK.
I drive change in healthcare practice, implementing innovative approaches to optimise person-centred care.
The aim of my work is to ensure that the individuals and groups get the best service from me.
Benefits for your team of working with a consultant pharmacist
Much of my education and mentoring work inspires healthcare professionals to develop the ability to combine evidence-based knowledge and their clinical judgment with a patient-centred approach. Developing these important consultative skills drives improved patient outcomes.
I particularly enjoy working with my “NHS family” of healthcare staff, providing support managing the daily challenges of their role. I offer a trusted, confidential sounding board where healthcare professionals can reflect on their approach, improve their communications skills and deal with any emotions that might arise.
Your staff can benefit from working with me in three ways:
– Coaching – supportive, restorative conversations and personal development for healthcare professionals
– Mentoring – one-to-one or group sessions to improve consultations skills
– Educating – talks, workshops, webinars on polypharmacy, multi-morbidity, frailty, care of older people, deprescribing and person-centred care
